A person using the name James Medlock has been building a following on econ Twitter. He likes to promote social democracy, strong labor unions, and what he calls "tax positivity." For Medlock, tax positivity means embracing tax policies such as VAT that are often rejected by those on the left as too regressive. Meanwhile, his calm and confident approach to Twitter debate has won him the admiration of even some who disagree with his views.

Medlock supports the idea of basic income, but he tends to view it as a redistributive welfare program. What do we think about his views?

For this week's reading, we have a recent Noah Smith Interview with James Medlock.
