When the Pager Hits the Fan, Will You Be Ready?

VIRTUAL MEETUP
To support the practice of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic (not to mention that gatherings of over 10 people are currently banned in MA), we are partnering with NomadPHP to convert this month's event to an online-only format!
TALK DESCRIPTION
In early 2017, the programming world watched as GitLab faced a nightmare scenario - a tired sysadmin, working late one night, accidentally ran rm -rf on the wrong directory containing 300GB of production data. During the course of the incident, GitLab realized that none of the 5 backup/replication strategies deployed were functional or reliable.
Disasters will happen. People will make mistakes. Solar flares, gremlins, Tuesday... all of these are things can cause havoc with computer systems. If you work in the industry long enough, you've most likely caused an outage yourself. When the late night page comes, will you be ready for it? Will the first time you restore a production database be at 3am when you were sound asleep 10 minutes prior?
In this talk, David will describe how the Systems and Infrastructure team at Webflow prepares for that late-night page. From mock disasters to continually validating procedures, he'll talk about the process, mindset, and approach they take to building a team that is ready for anything.
