Beginner / Intermediate Orienteering

Details
This posting is mostly piggybacking on another meetup hosted by Galen. See his details in this link:

If you are new to adventure racing (AR), this is a great opportunity to learn & practice basic navigation. if you can navigate & ride a mountain bike, you can do an adventure race. If you have no orienteering experience, checking out sites like https://betterorienteering.org/
is recommended. There's a lot to becoming an expert, but don't be intimidated by that site. You can do this event with very basic skills learned in a few minutes. Galen has training material on hand, & I can help also.
Registration is a bit convoluted.
-
Sign up to this meetup if you want to meet there and talk /ask questions about adventure racing (AR).
-
Sign up to Galen's meetup (link above). When you sign up, there will be a message about paying the organizer directly, but it doesn't automatically take you to the pay site.
-
Click the registration link in the description on Galen's meetup description. That will take you to an external site (not meetup) where you'll sign a waiver & pay for the event. The event in the AR group shows it as free because I'm not charging anything, but it's $20 per person when you register for Galen's event.
Heads up that as of 3/22, Galen mentioned that not many people were fully registered (meetup + waivered & paid), so he may cancel the event unless more people sign up. I think he lost a few people bc the registration process is awkward, so if you manage to get signed up, it's a good sign you'd be decent at AR.
Send me a message if you want to chat about AR while we're there.
What gear do you need? How much does it cost? How hard is it? What's a reentrant? How long are the races? How is AR different from the sport of orienteering? Skills, tips, etc.
