According to Mahayana Buddhism, the bodhisattva (awakened being) commits to easing the suffering of all beings, beginning by cultivating great kindness for ourselves. The Buddha laid out a powerful and practical path for pursuing this aspiration: the six paramitas, or transcendent virtues—generosity, discipline, patience, enthusiasm, meditation, and wisdom. In this class, we'll explore these practices from the perspective of emptiness: the insight that our world is empty of the stories we fabricate about it.
The class will include talks, detailed meditation instruction, contemplative exercises, and group discussion. There will also be opportunities for inidividual meetings with instructors who can support you in developing and maintaining your own meditation practice.
This class will meet in person weekly on Tuesday evenings from May 5 - June 2. We will also have the opportunity to experience some of the meditative methods in an all day special practice session on Saturday, June 6th.
NOTE: It is suggested that students have at least some experience with meditation as well as having attended an introductory Buddhist class.
