This is an amazing hike that has it all: Great views of Estes Park and Longs Peak, unique rock formations like Paul Bunyan's Boot (who according to the tall tales created the "10,000 lakes" of Minnesota), a Balanced Rock (which is as stunning as the one in Arches NP), and Gem Lake (a shallow pond filled in strictly by trapped snowmelt and rainfall). There is even a privy right beneath Gem Lake with a view of Longs Peak!

The final approach to Gem Lake is steep and rocky (large stone steps), so poles would be very helpful. We will take multiple breaks to enjoy the views and take pictures.

Please organize your own carpooling. Maybe we could have a late lunch in Estes Park before heading back home.

Please bring layers, water and a snack. Also, check back the day before the hike for possible weather related cancellations.
