Maude's Crack, No Business hike in Big South Fork National Recreation Area

Details

Let's spend a Saturday hiking and exploring the Maude's Crack and No Business area of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. This is a beautiful, remote area of the BSF that once was a thriving community. All that's left now are piles of stones and building foundations where homes and a school once stood. This area is very overgrown in summertime so early spring, late fall and winter are the best time for exploring and finding remains of the community that was once there.

We'll meet at the Terry Cemetery Trailhead and hike a little over a mile to Maude's Crack and the overlook, from there we'll descend to the river bottom below. The descent requires the use of a fixed rope to assist getting down through Maude's Crack. It's scarier looking than it is to do so if you're hesitant about this then this might not be the trip for you. If it's raining or conditions aren't safe we will use an alternate trail to get down to No Business.

There are no bathrooms or other facilities at the trailhead. I'll be dispered car camping less than a 1/2 mile from the trailhead on Friday night before the hike and Saturday night after the hike if anyone wants to come down early or camp after the hike.

Please dress appropriately and also bring water, snacks/lunch.

We'll be doing about 7 miles of hiking with plenty of breaks.

RSVP with integrity. If you RSVP'D "Yes" and discover you cannot go, please change your RSVP to "No" so others aren't standing around the parking waiting on you.
