Sturgeon Moon Night Hike at Mammoth Cave NP

Saturday night, August 9, 2025
7:00 p.m. central time (8:00 eastern). About 4 miles over a mix of rolling rocky trail, some gravel and pavement, and soft earth.

We'll start a loop hike from the Green River Ferry parking lot up to the Green River Bluffs Overlook, through the visitor center parking lot, and downhill past the cool historic cave entrance. We'll pass overlooks for both River Styx and Echo Springs, two of the underground rivers that emerge to flow into the Green River. Perhaps a cooler of ice-cold watermelon awaits at the end!

The Sturgeon Moon actually doesn't rise till 2:55 a.m. but the August skies should be cooler at night!

You must bring a headlight or flashlight! Bring water and snacks. Wear hiking or closed toe shoes in case we run into any critters on a hot summer night.
