We are looking at some issues in gender texts.
Recent scholarship on 1 Corinthians 11:4–16 has argued, amongst other things, that Paul is correcting men who are fault. As such, we will discuss the views of three female scholars: Judith Gundry; Lucy Peppiatt; and Cynthia Long Westfall.
Judith Gundry-Volf, ‘Gender and Creation in 1 Corinthians 11:2–16: A Study in Theological Method,’ in Evangelium Schriftauslegung Kirche: Festschrift für Peter Stuhlmacher zum 65. Geburtstag ed. Jostein DNA, Scott J. Hafemann, and Otfried Hofius (Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 1997), 151–171.
Lucy Peppiatt, Women and Worship at Corinth: Paul’s Rhetorical Arguments in 1 Corinthians (Eugene: Cascade, 2015).
Cynthia Long Westfall, Paul and Gender: Reclaiming the Apostle’s Vision for Men and Women in Christ (Grand Rapids: Baker, 2016), 24–42.
We'll structure our time as follows:
• For the first 15 minutes we'll catch up, then pray for one another's work. (There's no obligation to pray out loud.)
• For the next 60 minutes, we will discuss and reflect.
• We sometimes close with a time of lectio divina: https://www.anglicancommunion.org/media/253799/1-What-is-Lectio-Divina.pdf.
