John Gleason, known as Godless Engineer, is an atheist content creator and secular activist who combines humor with a critical look at religion and the Bible. He will examine two specific claims about Christian origins.
Did the Romans invent Christianity? Did Marcion or a group of second-century Christian writers create key New Testament texts? Those are big claims. Let’s see how they hold up when we look at the writing itself.
Join us for some literary detective work using stylometry—the study of patterns in writing style. We’ll explore the Pauline letters and Gospel accounts to see what their authors’ word choices and writing habits might reveal.
John will make the case that these documents predate the proposed Marcionite origins and that their stylistic patterns challenge Joseph Atwill’s theory that the Romans invented Christianity. It’s a chance to dig into some bold ideas about Christian origins and ask: Does the evidence back them up?
John's videos explore Christian origins, arguments about the historical existence of Jesus, and the evidence behind religious claims. A former Christian, John is passionate about helping people who question or leave religion feel less alone. He has built an online community that encourages people to ask questions, speak up, and support one another. He also helps organize Rocket City Reason, a conference celebrating science, skepticism, and secular community in Huntsville, Alabama.
