Ever since those two iconic notes by John Williams sent swimmers running from the water, sharks have been cast as the villain. But the truth is far more fascinating—and far less frightening.
Join marine biologist Sophie Maycock for a deep dive into the science, beauty and biology, of these often misunderstood creatures. We’ll bust the myths, confront the fears, and reveal how sharks really live and adapt beneath the waves.
Sophie will be drawing on her research into shark personality, homing behaviour, and population trends, shared through her platform SharkSpeak and work with global NGOs. Step behind the scenes of real scientific investigations and see how these creatures are grappling with threats from overfishing, habitat loss & climate change, and learn to see sharks with less fear and more appreciation and wonder!

(Children are welcome - all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult)

Sophie will be signing copies of her new book, SHARK: The Illustrated Biography, which will be available to purchase on the night.

This event will take place upstairs in The Nightingale Room at The Grand Central Pub, Brighton. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access at the venue.
