STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
How people fit into and reflect their environment, rather than isolating one from the other is where the true nature of street photography lies. Here in Brighton we have one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in the country. We also have a range of architecture and landscape to frame those communities that is unparalleled; the sea, the city, the Downs.
ON THE DAY
We'll spend the morning walking through a carefully chosen mix of well-known and off-the-beaten-track areas of Brighton, practising the skills needed to capture what makes this city so special.
Throughout the day, you'll learn:
- How to shoot discreetly — capturing the shots you want without drawing unwanted attention
- How to read a scene — developing your awareness of what's happening around you and anticipating the next great shot
- How to position yourself — placing yourself in the right spot before the moment arrives
- How to plan and wait — understanding when patience and preparation beat spontaneity
- How to capture the spontaneous — embracing the beautiful randomness that makes street photography endlessly exciting
Street photography is a rewarding and infinitely variable style of photography. Because of this, it is also one of the most enjoyable and, due to it’s nature, easy to accommodate in your day-to-day life.
I hope you’ll join me in exploring the streets and sights of Brighton and Hove and expanding your enjoyment of photography.

Location Photography Workshop
the white horse ,, Marine Drive, High Street, Rottingdean, Brighton BN2 7HR, Brighton, GBDo you arrive at a location, take multiple shots but still don't get the results you want? Then this is the workshop for you.
One of the greatest skills that professional location photographers develop is the ability to assess a scene when they arrive at it. They are practiced at distilling a scene’s key elements into a beautiful or striking photograph, shaped from the much wider landscape a scene conveys. They do this by utilising a number of key skills:- recognising and honing in on what interests them in the scene;
- knowing basic composition rules and guidelines;
- knowing how certain lenses will affect the look of the scene, and;
- how to ‘re-shape’ lighting using their camera settings.
By using these skills they can ‘shape’ an extraordinary image from the ordinary. It is composing an image as opposed to recording it. Better yet, it isn’t any of the things you may have been told: a ‘good eye’, the preserve of the ‘gifted’ or an innate artistic ‘sensibility’. It is a skill and like any skill, it can be taught.
This 1/2-day workshop has been specifically designed to help you begin to develop those skills.
We will visit Rottingdean, a picturesque town on the South Coast. It has many small, pretty but not overly striking areas. These are just the type of locations that are difficult to represent successfully without developing the skills mentioned above. It is also home to some very dramatic coastal scenes that many people find difficult to convey successfully in their photos.
I’ll show you how to get the best from both these types of location, teaching you what to do when first arriving at a location you wish to photograph, then ‘building’ the key elements of the photograph in your mind before even using your camera.## WHAT DO I NEED FOR THE DAY?
