The complete studio portrait day
Tichborne Studios, 18 Tichborne Street, Brighton, al, GBThere’s more to a successful photo shoot than simply knowing how the lights work and where to put them.
This workshop is designed for:- those with no prior knowledge of flash or studio lighting or;
- those who have but are struggling to realise their images.
I’ll start by showing you the different types of gear - lights, modifiers and triggers - that are used in all professional studios and can also be used at home.
I’ll show you how they work together and the get you to ‘build’ a photo to look exactly how you want it, starting with single light setups, moving all the way through to three-light setups.
NOT JUST TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
I’ll show you where to get inspiration for a creative shoot, how best to prepare before you even get near a studio, and how to liaise with your subjects in advance and on the day to help make the shoot more fun and exciting for them and you.
I’ll take you through setting a relaxed tone in the studio and also how to interact with your subjects to help them relax and get the best results from them.
It’s these aspects of studio photography that are most often overlooked, or not even considered, and why even technically accomplished setups can fail.
You’ll be taking the shots and setting up the lights as we go. Experimentation is key to learning.
There will be a 45-minute break for lunch.

Sculpting with light
Richmond Place, Brighton, BN2 9NA, Richmond Place, Brighton, GBLearn to create expressive, character-driven portraits
Do you feel your portrait photography is technically solid but missing that spark of interest and emotional range to make it outstanding? Are you stuck in a creative rut and searching for more expressive, compelling ways to photograph your subjects?
While ‘neutral’ lighting has a place, great portraiture goes far beyond simply placing lights for an even exposure.
Lighting is an interpretive tool, used to enhance the full spectrum of your subject’s personality—sultry, humorous, intense, reflective, joyful or melancholic—and knowing how to use it, along with composition and mood, is the purpose of this workshop.
You’ll also discover that you don’t need endless gear to create powerful, memorable images. Instead, you will learn:- How to design lighting that enhances your subject’s character and emotional tone;
- How to motivate your models to deliver more depth, energy and authenticity during a session;
- How to build mood, refine composition and apply lighting techniques that elevate your portraits to a more professional, expressive level.
Portrait photography is a collaborative art, and this workshop will show you how to make that collaboration natural, engaging and creatively rich. You’ll learn how to pre‑plan a number of creative looks and then adapt fluidly during the shoot, as you and your subject start to bounce ideas off one another inspired by the day.
Sculpting with light will reignite your passion for photographing people, help expand your stylistic range and bring new life to every portrait you create.Who Is This Workshop For?

Street Photography Workshop
Brighton Station, Queens Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 3XP, London, GBFull details of this workshop can be found at brightonphotographyworkshops.com
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
How people fit into and reflect their environment, rather than isolating one from the other is where the true nature of street photography lies. Here in Brighton we have one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in the country. We also have a range of architecture and landscape to frame those communities that is unparalleled; the sea, the city, the Downs.ON THE DAY
We'll spend the morning walking through a carefully chosen mix of well-known and off-the-beaten-track areas of Brighton, practising the skills needed to capture what makes this city so special.
Throughout the day, you'll learn:- How to shoot discreetly — capturing the shots you want without drawing unwanted attention
- How to read a scene — developing your awareness of what's happening around you and anticipating the next great shot
- How to position yourself — placing yourself in the right spot before the moment arrives
- How to plan and wait — understanding when patience and preparation beat spontaneity
- How to capture the spontaneous — embracing the beautiful randomness that makes street photography endlessly exciting
Street photography is a rewarding and infinitely variable style of photography. Because of this, it is also one of the most enjoyable and, due to it’s nature, easy to accommodate in your day-to-day life.
I hope you’ll join me in exploring the streets and sights of Brighton and Hove and expanding your enjoyment of photography.WHAT DO I NEED FOR THE DAY?
