Tarrytown Jaunt

Details

Let's ride the Empire State Trail, from Van Cortlandt Park to Tarrytown, and back!
This will be an advanced ride - due to the distance and a very steep hill - with an option to only do half the ride, and take the train back to the city.

Technically, the Empire State Trail starts at the bottom of Manhattan, but this is the first portion of the trail that is truly out of the city. It's a beautiful paved trail that winds gently through the woods with minimal need to stop! For those primarily accustomed to the start-stop of city riding, this will let you open up and get in the zone! We will take the trail north for around 17 miles. At this point we will split off from the trail and drop down a big hill into Tarrytown, a delightful little town along the Hudson river. Once there we'll tarry in Tarrytown, grab some food, rest, and hang out. Then those who want to stay and take the train back can do so, and the rest of us will muscle up the hill and breeze back on the trail, ending the ride right where we started - at Van Cortlandt Park.

The Route
View the route at this link:

The ride starts from Van Cortlandt Park at 10:30 am. Wheels roll at 11:00 am.
We'll ride up the Empire State Trail about 19 miles up to Tarrytown, where we'll stop to have lunch and rest. Those who want, can leave the ride here and take the Metro North train back to the city. The rest of us will ride back up the hill (yes, there's a very steep hill to climb!) and take the same route back to Van Cortlandt Park.

Ride Level:
- Full ride, out and back = Advanced -- 40 miles.
- Half the ride, just to Tarrytown = Intermediate -- 20 miles.

Speed: Approx 10 - 11 mph average

Please consider your fitness and preparedness before joining. All Brompton riders who are comfortable with the pace and distance are welcome!

What to bring

  • Sunglasses can be nice as the trail can be buggy with little gnats
  • Water enough for 20 miles, as there aren't many amenities along the trail.
  • Please ensure your tires are inflated and your bike is in good working order
  • Spare inner tube in case of flats - everyone should bring this

Transit

  • You can take the 1 train to Van Cortlandt Park - or ride to the start!
  • For anyone only doing half the ride and taking Metro North back, a one-way train fare is $11 to Grand Central, and you can buy your ticket in advance using the MTA TrainTime app. You can also buy it at the station via the kiosks.
