Fort Tilden Beach Ride

Details
Let's ride to Fort Tilden Beach, a serene uncrowded beach adjacent to Jacob Riis Beach on the Rockaway Peninsula. Fort Tilden Beach is part of a historic site administered by the National Park Service and feels worlds away from NYC. Please note that there are no lifeguards.
This ride is for Brompton bicycles only.
We'll meet at the carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park, then do a 22-mile ride through Brooklyn to Fort Tilden Beach. We'll hang out on the beach for sunbathing, and then we'll enjoy an early picnic dinner. The ride ends at the beach and you can choose how to return home: The most popular option is a short ride to the Rockaway stop of NYC Ferry, which will bring you either to Sunset Park or Wall Street. You can also take the A train back into the city. And, of course, you are welcome to ride home!
The Route
[Link coming soon]
The Ride
- This ride is considered intermediate due to the distance (22 miles) and the amount of city riding.
- The ride is almost completely flat
- The ride is mainly on protected bike lanes but alongside busy streets.
- We will try to keep our speed up, but the average speed will be moderate due to the many stoplights along the way.
What to Bring
- If you have a tarp or tent, please bring it - there is no shade on the beach.
- Beach blanket and/or towel
- Plenty of water, as this is a remote beach
- Snacks for the ride and food for a beach picnic.
Amenities
- Restrooms: There are outhouses at the entrance to the park, about 5 minutes biking from where we'll sit in the sand. (You can also bike 10 minutes to Jacob Riis beach for real restrooms.).
Please maintain your RSVP
If you can't attend, please update your RSVP so someone from the waiting list can have your spot. Riders with a history of "no shows" may be removed from the ride in favor of others on the waiting list.
Please respect the waiting list
We need to maintain our maximum rider-to-ride-leader ratio, so please respect the waiting list, thanks!
