Oeshiki Holiday Service

### Oeshiki
Oeshiki is the annual memorial service commemorating the passing of Nichiren Shonin, founder of Nichiren Shu Buddhism. On October 13, 1282, while traveling from Mt. Minobu toward the hot springs in Hitachi Province in hopes of recovering his health, Nichiren Shonin became too ill to continue his journey. He stayed at the residence of Ikegami Munenaka in present-day Tokyo, where he passed away on the morning of October 13 at the age of 60.
Traditionally, Oeshiki is a time to remember Nichiren Shonin’s life, teachings, and lifelong dedication to spreading the Lotus Sutra and the Odaimoku, Namu Myoho Renge Kyo. Temples throughout Nichiren Buddhism commemorate the occasion with memorial services, chanting, offerings, and special decorations.
Please join us at Kosen-ji as we express our gratitude to Nichiren Shonin and reflect upon how we can continue to practice and transmit the teachings of the Lotus Sutra in our own lives.
All are welcome. No previous experience with Buddhism or Nichiren Shu is necessary.
We encourage practitioners to get their own copy of either the Romanized Lotus Sutra or a Yohon (Selected Writings of the Lotus Sutra) for performing service with us. Most liturgy books only have a couple of readings of the Lotus Sutra (2 and 16 are most common). Our Temple usually chants a large section of Yohon. You should also have a liturgy book with the parts of our liturgy. Morning & Evening Service contains the liturgy that we use at our Temple. Other Nichiren Shu Liturgy books would work as well. If you have questions about liturgy please email Ryuoh Shonin (ryuoh@comcast.net).
Some copies are available for purchase at the Temple. We do take credit cards.
