Many of us took refuge in a ceremony with little prior instruction, then encountered the topic again only in introductory courses aimed at newcomers — so refuge tends to function as a credential, something that happened, rather than a living practice with real philosophical depth.
This course treats refuge as a subject worth serious attention: what actually makes the Three Jewels valid objects of refuge, why the Dharma of realization (not scripture) is the primary refuge object, and what it means for Sangha refuge to refer specifically to Arya beings rather than the practitioner community.
Understanding what refuge is protecting against, and how, determines whether daily refuge practice is a genuine lived experience. If you come with real questions about how your practice functions, the tradition has more to say on this than you may realize.
