BUGSS is a non-profit public laboratory that provides lab access so that anyone can safely and affordably investigate the living world. We offer classes, seminars, and group projects to help all those interested to learn about the latest and greatest in science.

Marine Microplastics (for ages 12-18)
Gunpowder Falls State Park - Hammerman Area, 7200 Graces Quarters Road, Middle River, MD, USCome with us to Gunpowder Falls State Park to learn about and conduct research on marine microplastics!
This outdoor, field-based class will immerse participants in a hands-on exploration of marine debris, combining interactive discussions with real-world data collection. Participants will work in small groups to investigate debris through activities like collection/categorization, timelines of decomposition, and debris identification. By the end of this three-hour class, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of the sources, impacts, and solutions to marine debris in local waterways and beyond.
You may either meet us at Gunpowder Falls (meeting info to follow) or get a ride with us from the BUGSS lab (101 N Haven St, Baltimore). Please select the appropriate ticket based on which you prefer. Ticket prices include admission to the park.

Chris specializes in marine-related informal education activities and has been working with students since 2016. In his free time, Chris enjoys hiking and volunteering as a Certified Maryland Master Naturalist at environmental festivals and habitat restorations.

Molecular Biotechnology Bootcamp for Ages 12-17!
Baltimore Under Ground Science Space, 101 N Haven St #105, Baltimore, MD, USThe course is hands-on project based so you will use the techniques discussed in class in order to purify genomic DNA, isolate a specific gene from that genomic DNA, clone that gene, and make the protein that gene encodes. Additional support will be given with online materials that include videos and links to expand on knowledge and understanding. Although we will be immersing ourselves right into the hands-on work there will be explanations of the techniques and concepts behind the biology of these techniques during class so prepare yourself some fun whirlwind learning!
