What we're about

Blacks United in Leading Technology International, BUiLT is a global professional association for Black professionals in technology and our allies. We are "Building Tech Equity" by providing value to our community in the form of networking, education, and mentorship opportunities. We provide resources, guidance and challenge members to establish new standards of innovation through collaboration.

BUiLT Boston, the official local chapter of BUiLT National, is a professional platform for People of Color in technology in the Greater Boston area. BUiLT serves to increase the visibility and participation of PoC in tech through community, media, mentorship, and stewardship.

Our events are held in-person and virtually, with a winning mix of top tech presentations, entrepreneurial series, networking events, social justice messaging, collaborations with other aligned groups, career advancement seminars, and Member’s Only, Reserved and Private Events.

We educate people and seek to increase the representation of Black women and men in technology. It’s proven, enterprises that embrace diversity yield the most innovative solutions. We’re talking to the entire tech community including founders, software developers, scientists, digital media specialists, system engineers, webmasters, technicians, QA folks, social media strategists, cyber-security analysts, online marketing experts, UI/UX artists, recruiters, bloggers, operations staff, project managers – and many, many more technology professionals, students and educators.

This group is perfect for individuals interested in IT certifications, industry best practices, study groups, and anything IT related. Although we are a group for Black IT Professionals, we do not discriminate against anyone, instead we want to uplift and encourage all races and ethnicities. Non-technologist supporters are welcome to join our community too!

Join us. Exchange knowledge. Provide your viewpoints. Let’s explore together the many ways technology is changing the world. Let’s stomp the divide, and help ensure technology is inclusive for all.

Virtual Speed Networking for BUiLT Members

Network event

Online event

Networking is a key element of BUiLT but recent circumstances have made in-person networking difficult, to say the least. So we are doing Virtual Speed Networking events instead. These unique events will have a maximum of 10 participants (including the moderator) and all participants will get an opportunity to chat it up with every other participant in a 1 on 1 setting.

Here’s how it works. The moderator will give all participants a question to answer then split the participants into 1 on 1 breakout rooms. Participants will have 5 minutes to introduce themselves, tell each other their answer to the question, and just chat. Answering the question is optional but encouraged. After 5 minutes all participants will return to the main lobby where they will get another question and be put in a new breakout room with a different partner.

This will continue for 10 questions, ensuring that all the participants have met at least once in a 1 on 1 setting. After that we will have open networking with 5 breakout rooms available for participants to jump in and out of as they see fit, for the remainder of the time.

Doesn’t that sound fun.

If you want to participate please register on this page. Space is limited and will be given out on a first come first serve basis. Please be sure that you can attend the event prior to registering. We will be doing more events like this in the future and will give priority registration to anyone who registers here but is not able to make the list.

All attendees are expected to follow our event code of conduct & anti-harassment policy found here: https://builtinternational.org/event-code-of-conduct/.

Also, please note that this event is for BUiLT Members ONLY. If you are not a dues-paying member then you cannot attend. But you can learn more about becoming a member @ BUiLTInternational.org/sign-up.

First Generation ... in Tech

Network event

Online event

Your parents immigrated to the United States, and you were just a kid. Or, you were one of the first American children in your family. Things are different in America, and your parents had a lot to figure out.

Somehow, you made your way into adult-hood, into tech, or at least you know that's what you want to do.

How do 1st Generation children navigate their way in tech?

Meet Asmara Hagos, BUiLT's new Assistant Executive Director. She's a first generation American, and her parents immigrated from Eritrea.

Eritrea, officially the State of Eritrea, is a country in the Horn of Africa region of Eastern Africa, with its capital (and largest city) at Asmara. It is bordered by Ethiopia in the south, Sudan in the west, and Djibouti in the southeast. The northeastern and eastern parts of Eritrea have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea. The nation has a total area of approximately 117,600 km2 (45,406 sq mi), and includes the Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands.

In our series on Social Justice, learn of the special challenges of being a Black minority in a new country, which is foreign to your parents.

Other's find themselves in this situation, and let's applaud Asmara on her quest to help others who face the challenges she did.
