The poll is closed! Thank you to everyone who responded, especially everyone who took the time to comment on their choice.
The top 3 choices were Farthing, The Drowned World and 1984. Based on the comments, I think both 1984 and The Drowned World would be good choices for future meetings.
(For those who are curious, the small size of the survey meant that Farthing won by 1 vote.)
The choices were:
1984 by George Orwell - dystopia, probably the most bedsit book on this list
The Drowned World by JG Ballard - climate change dystopia, with monsters
The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham - the struggle of man vs. plant-alien
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley - dystopia, unless you've had your soma
Farthing by Jo Walton - alt history set in a dark version of 1949
Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke - humans are the children in this metaphor
If you don't feel like voting, you can pick OTHER and suggest a book for a future meeting.
Remember, you don't have to like the book or even finish to attend the discussion.
A link to register through Zoom will be sent out in the newsletter -butlersandbedsits.substack.com - and the Zoom ID will be sent the morning of the meeting through Meetup messages if you want to join directly. Please make sure that you are subscribed to Meetup emails for this event to receive any other updates.
FUTURE MEETINGS
July: A Month in the Country, JL Carr
August: The Lonely Londoners, Samuel Selvon
(this was supposed to be the next book, but I've had some issues getting a copy, so I want to make sure the people who want to read it can get it)
