Lessons learned while running a huge microservices environment on a Mesos cluster

Microservices environments are up to 20 times larger than their monolithic counterparts and they are also far more dynamic. In this lightning talk I’ll discuss some of the lessons we learned while working with a huge ecommerce environment that’s managed by Mesos/Marathon. Key points that I’ll explore during the talk:

  • Don't break your network layer and co-locate containers- Hungry containers can be problematic for Mesos nodes- Failing services lead to intermediary mushroom-cloud effects- Automation is required for efficient problem resolution

Alois Mayr is Technology Lead for Cloud and Containers with the Dynatrace Innovation Lab. He works on bringing full-stack monitoring to cloud and PaaS platforms such as Docker-based stacks and Cloud Foundry. In his role as technology lead he works very closely with R&D and customers and supports them with their journey to those platforms. He is also blogger and speaker at conferences and meetups where he shares lessons learned and other user stories. Before joining Dynatrace, he was a researcher for an organization focused on software quality measurements and evaluation.

GPU Support in Mesos

GPUs are the tool of choice for accelerating the data mining, machine learning and deep learning algorithms abundant in today's data-driven computing industry. These algorithms help solve problems ranging from weather forecasting to face and speech recognition to helping find a cure for cancer. In spite of this, Mesos has traditionally not supported GPUs as an allocatable resource. Come learn how we have finally added native GPU support into Mesos.

Kevin Klues is a Senior Software Engineer at Mesosphere working on the Mesos core team. Prior to joining Mesosphere, he worked at Google on an experimental operating system for data centers called Akaros. He and a few others founded the Akaros project while working on their Ph.Ds at UC Berkeley. In a past life Kevin was a lead developer of the TinyOS project, working at Stanford, the Technical University of Berlin, and the CSIRO in Australia. When not working, you can usually find Kevin on a snowboard or up in the mountains in some capacity or another.
