What we're about

Sharing humanism since 2013. Building community through respectful, cooperative sharing of skills and inspirations while having fun.
Ideas between friends
Calgary Secular Assembly seeks to build community for the secular/humanist/atheist crowd by offering a cooperative sharing of talents in order to foster inspiration and growth.
Ideas Between Friends is our feature event that brings together a thirst for knowledge, critical thinking, and community building. Join us for a deep-dive into a variety of tantalizing subjects via PowerPoint, interviews, demonstrations, and more.
Meetings happen each month on the 2nd Sunday and are typically 30-60 minutes of a presentation/discussion followed by a similar amount of time for socializing or further conversation over snacks with coffee or tea. Remember — the world smiles a bit if you bring your favorite (reusable) coffee mug with you. Note: Masks are optional. Some wear ‘em – some don’t, but please respect these choices – we all have different comfort levels for our health and safety.
Philosophy in 20
Philosophy in 20 continues as on-line Zoom meetings on the 4th Sunday of each month. A short interview with a prominent philosopher (15-20 minutes) is first played as a jumping off point for discussing a topic in philosophy or applied ethics. (If you just want to come and listen, that's perfectly fine too.) We try hard to achieve that sweet spot between accessibility and injuring your brain. It may help to listen to the interview ahead of time, but that is totally up to you. Look on the Meetup site or our website to see next month's topic and interview, plus tentative proposed topics in the months to follow.
Café or Pub Social
Enjoy some social time - often with a fav book for a conversation starter. Head to a pub or coffee shop and explore. Consider bringing a book or two that you’d like a friend to borrow - or simply join the conversation. Perhaps a dusty treasure will find a new home for a while so that you or another can enjoy or be motivated.
Alternately scheduled on a weekday afternoon or a weekday evening depending on interest and availability. See the event Meetup page for precise dates and locations.
Outdoor Venture Days
BBQs and field days (games in the park) are a great way to get to know people better and have a few laughs while the weather holds. Sometimes we just like to head out for a walk, a hike, a bike, a ski, or some other adventure. We need to venture out as those opportunities come up.
We are low-key casual, but an RSVP is requested (for non-Zoom events) as it helps with our planning.
