Trail Details
Distance: Approx. 12.3 km (Out-and-back)
Elevation gain: Approx. 1100 meters
Time: Approx. 7 hours (including breaks)Trail Description: Our day starts on the usual Sheep River Trail. About 3km in, we will cross the first bridge, before immediately turning climber's left into the forest. We will steeply ascend this forest trail to the treeline. The first scree section above the trees is quite loose and sits below a rockband with pinnacles. We will carefully zig-zag up the scree, taking care to not kick down rocks on each other. A short scree grind after the first rockband will bring us to the ridge proper.
On ascent, we will aim to stay on the crest of the ridge as much as possible, taking advantage of the generally solid rock. There are several rock bands on the ridge, each with multiple weaknesses to ascend. Some options are more difficult than others - each attendee can pick the options that seem reasonable to them. The ridge scramble will eventually lead to the False Summit. From there, it's a short walk to the True Summit.
We will enjoy the summit views and retrace our steps down the ridge. On descent, we can bypass some ridge scrambling using scree trails on skier's left. We will carefully descend the loose scree section near the treeline. From the treeline, it's a straightforward hike back to the parking lot.
