Heart Mountain Horseshoe Trail
Details
Perfect Day for This Hike, The Heart Mountain Horseshoe Trail is not a regular hike, as it involves minor scrambling and some light rock climbing. It can also get really windy at times, so this is not a hike for beginners hikers. This trail passes by three different peaks, including: Heart Mountain, Grant McEwan Peak, and a smaller unnamed peak. While dogs are permitted in the area, it is not recommended to bring them on this hike due to its technical terrain. The first part is very well marked and you are going straight uphill till arriving at the boulder wall section. Then you will hit a larger wall section to climb up, where it is important to use caution since it’s steep but well marked and a good area to use common sense with lots of places to grab onto and place feet. During the weekday, since this trail is more difficult than others in the area, the trail is not heavily trafficked. The ascent is lots of fun for hikers used to this scramble. It offers a lot of variation and natural changes. Views are absolutely incredible and very unique in the area. If you like to scramble, you will really enjoy the higher elevation here. Once eventually at the summit of the mountain with beautiful views, then you continue the loop at higher elevation, where it’s fairly long but great views all around. The descent is a different beast. Poles are probably the best way to remain safe and uninjured on the way down.
