Mount Lassen Chapter Vina Plains Preserve
Meet at 8:30 am at the west lot of Chico Park & Ride or 9:00 am at the Vina Plains Preserve gate across Hwy 99 from Haille Road. It is about a 20 minute drive from Chico. During springtime the Preserve comes alive with colorful wildflowers which carpet the grasslands and ring the vernal pools in spectacular bands of color. The pools support many rare, threatened or endangered species and attract a large array of waterfowl and shorebirds that feast on small crustaceans that fill the pools this time of year. Elena Gregg will talk about vernal pools and show us samples of fairy shrimp, and explain specific pollinators for flowers. The one-mile walk is relatively flat but the surface will be uneven with cow footprints, and may be slippery and wet in places depending on the weather. Wear hiking boots for uneven and often muddy terrain. Be prepared for possible windy conditions, bring water and binoculars. Leaders: Elena Gregg and Marjorie
