Convict Canyon is part of John Muir Wilderness, the largest and highest mountain wilderness in California. Lying mostly above treeline between 7000 and 13000 feet, this region features glaciated peaks, clusters of alpine lakes, meadows, and babbling creeks.

Our Saturday activities will be hiking to Lake Dorothy at 10,275 foot elevation, after hiking around Convict Lake and Convict Canyon, and Lake Mildred. Those who want an easier outing can turn around earlier.

Our campsite is at Old Shady Rest Campground (elevation 7800 feet) located in the town of Mammoth Lakes. Within a few miles of Convict Lake are a number of natural, undeveloped hot springs fed by Hot Creek. We can go for a night soak after the hiking day.

Directions To Old Shady Rest Campground:

From Lake Tahoe area take Hwy 50 or Hwy 88 to US 395 in Nevada, then proceed south to Mammoth Lakes, CA. Exit Hwy 203 West for 2.6 miles, turn right on Sawmill Cutoff Rd, campground is on your left after 0.3 mile. Allow 5 hours from Sacramento.

Alternate route: take Highway 108 from Central Valley until the end, then take US 395 south to Mammoth Lakes. Allow 4.5 hours from Sacramento or 5+ hours from the Bay Area.

Max number of vehicles: 2 per camp site. Additional vehicle may be parked nearby.

Dogs: Allowed.

Food/Water: Each guest has choice of preparing own food or dine at one of the restaurant/cafeterias in the valley. Bring lunch and drink for the Saturday hike.

Other notes: Site has fire ring and picnic table. Facilities include flush toilets nearby. Showers are available nearby in the Mammoth Mountain RV Park.

Strenuous activities: Activities organized by this group, including all activities included on this trip, are considered physically strenuous. You are responsible for knowing your own personal limits and selecting events within those limits. You must be physically and mentally prepared for all of the possibilities that accompany strenuous outdoor activities.
