From scientist to cake artist
Details
Paula Cawkill spent years in a lab, with a PhD and a career in the fragrance and flavour industry. Then she swapped the lab coat for an apron, her experiments for recipes and her pipettes for piping bags.
So what happens when a scientist starts baking celebration cakes for a living?
Today, Paula of Cakeolicious creates bespoke cakes from her Cambridge kitchen. Her cakes have marked everything from family birthdays to a retirement for the founder of Hotel Chocolat, an anniversary cake cut by the Duke of Edinburgh, and fifty years of science at the British Antarctic Survey.
So what do spreadsheets, scientific experiments and sugar have in common? Quite a lot as it turns out.
Come along to hear how curiosity, experiments and an eye for detail turn out to be useful in cake design, and what it’s really like to run a business from home.
For curious minds. Free, as ever.
