About us
Start Making Sense is a 1.5‑year Team Science project by the Leiden‑Delft‑Erasmus Centre for BOLD Cities. The initiative examines how surveillance and sensor technologies shape public space, with a central aim to develop Rotterdam’s first citizen‑driven camera register. Through this public register, we want to make visible who installs cameras in the city, for what purposes, and under which conditions, turning often‑invisible surveillance practices into something transparent, debatable, and democratically contestable.
Together with several wonderful local initiatives in Rotterdam, we are developing workshops, mapping tours, and collaborative activities that weave research, public engagement, and collective sense‑making on urban surveillance in daily life. These events also explore practical forms of action, for example: how can we question, challenge, or reshape the presence of these technologies in their neighborhoods?
Hope to see you soon!
