"Eric Hodgins' 1946 semi-fictional memoir Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is the flat-out funniest book to ever usher in the post-war boom in suburban real estate and naive optimism. It's a wonderful film as well, starring the dream-team threesome Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Melvyn Douglas. Jonathan Yardley hit the nail on the head with this summation in the Washington Post: "City rubes taken to the cleaners by country slickers." The story is based on the author's own misbegotten adventures in home ownership, which couldn't have been a laff riot every grim misstep of the way. Still, it laid the groundwork for a truly delightful comedy containing just a dollop of--as Mr. B. himself grumbles at his smug teenage daughters over breakfast one morning--"social significance."
