Practice Presentation: Jung, Alchemy, Gnosticism, and the Religious Function
This practice session is an opportunity to prepare for my September 2026 presentation on Carl Jung's understanding of alchemy, Gnosticism, and the religious function of the psyche.
Together we will explore how Jung viewed Alchemy and Gnostic symbolism not as obsolete belief systems, but as symbolic expressions of the psyche's innate drive toward wholeness and individuation. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between symbolic transformation, the development of consciousness, and the emergence of the Self.
We will also examine Jung's concept of the religious function as a natural psychological process that seeks meaning through myth, dream, ritual, and symbol rather than through doctrine alone.
Audience questions, comments, and thoughtful critiques are especially welcome, as they will help refine both the content and presentation before the formal talk. Whether you are new to Jung or a longtime student, your participation is warmly encouraged.
