CHEW Series #12 - Steady/Moderate/Brisk/Strenuous

Details
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL RIDERS AND RIDE LEADERS ATTENDING CHEW 12.
-------------------------------------- new message
CHEW participants, if you are planning to join us for CHEW #12, please note the following:
-
EARLY RIDE START: Please check in by 7:45 a.m. at the ride start in West Seattle. All paces will depart promptly at 8:00 a.m. for the ferry. Please arrive early.
-
FERRY FEE: To make payment and loading to the ferry easier, riders are asked to pay $6.10 (EXACT CHANGE ONLY) to their ride leaders when they check in at the start location. The ride leader will give you a colored card to hand the ferry worker as we board the ferry. This will be your “ticket” onto the boat!
-
WAIVERS: To expedite the check in process, please fill out an online waiver.Cascade has created a very short, simple electronic waiver form that you may fill out online instead of filling it out the morning of the ride. You will still need to check in with your pace group ride leader that morning, however, to confirm your attendance and pay for your ferry ticket. The traditional waiver form will also be at the ride start for those that are unable to fill out an online waiver.
-
ONLINE WAIVER INSTRUCTIONS: To fill out an online waiver, do the following before 3:00 p.m. on Friday, 3/28:
-
Visit http://www.cascade.org and sign in (or create a free account, if you do not already have one).
-
Once you have signed in, go to the calendar (www.cascade.org/calendar) and find the CHEW #12 ride listings on March 30.
-
Click on your desired pace group steady (yellow), moderate (green), brisk (both blue and orange), or strenuous (both white and purple).
-
On the page for that pace group, click on the “register” button at the top of the page, fill in the blanks and click on “save registration.” You’re all done! If you are unable to come on the ride, no worries. The registration is meant to expedite the waiver sign in at the ride start.
-
FERRY PROTOCOL: Please follow the directions from your ride leaders and the ferry workers. Bikes must be walked down the ferry ramp onto the boat. Secure your bike with ropes or along the rails, or else lay them down in the area designated by the ferry workers. Exposed cleats are not allowed in the boat cabin. For the return ferry from Vashon to Fauntleroy, stage you and your bike IN FRONT of lane 1 (so in front of the cars). Lane 1 is closest to the rightmost side of the dock along the railing. There is no fee for the return sailing.
-
WEATHER: We will try to make a call by 6:45 a.m. on 3/30 if the ride needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather. We will post a notice to this Meetup site if we are cancelling the ride.
Thank you for your help as we work to streamline the check in process for this event!

The CHEW Series will be held Sundays on January 5 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147202762/), 12 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204162/), 19 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204232/), 26 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204272/), Feb 2 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204312/), 9 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204422/), 16 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204462/), March 2 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204492/), 9 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204552/), 16 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204602/), 23 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204722/), and 30 (https://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/events/147204862/) at various starting points on the east side. These will be climbing routes on local hills which will progress from ~ 30 miles and 2500’ of elevation gain to 50+ miles and 4500’ elevation gain. There will be four paces offered -- steady (12-14 on flats), moderate (14-16 on flats), brisk minus and brisk plus (16-18 on flats), and strenuous (19-20 on flats). All pace groups will use a common route each week.
Please RSVP to Meetup for ride updates and to help us determine the appropriate number of ride leaders. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start to hear the route briefing, safety presentation, and sign the waiver form for an on-time departure.
Riders should be able to sustain the appropriate pace for their selected group, know how to read a cue sheet, change a flat tire (and have the requisite equipment to do so) and have a positive attitude. Ride Leaders and Sweeps will not stop long for flats or mechanical issues due to group safety.
Faster riders are welcome to join but for them the ride becomes self-guided. Riders can ride on their own, in smaller groups, or with the appropriate Ride Leader.
A limited number of cue sheets will be available at the ride start so please print your own just in case. The final route and cue sheet will be available on Meetup.com the weekend prior to each ride. Rest stops will be planned as noted on the route cue sheet.
A good headlight and taillight are recommended. Fenders are highly encouraged -- without them you may be asked to ride at the back of your pace group as a courtesy to the other riders.
Regroup policy: This is a training series so we will ride with the best interest of the group in mind. We will regroup at the top of hills for a reasonable amount of time as well as at major turns. Stops will be brief. Riders may need to fall back to a slower pace group if they fall behind. If you are riding in the last pace group, the ride leaders will make sure you have a cue sheet and feel comfortable to finish the ride or will stay with you as need be. We want everyone to ride hard but to have fun and get back safely.
Please print your contact information clearly on the waiver form in case we need to reach you for any reason.
Here are some specifics for this route:
CUE SHEET Link (http://files.meetup.com/3386582/CHEW12_r1_03-30-14_Vashon.pdf)
ROUTE: Route (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3665929)
COST: $6.10 for passenger/bike ticket (Bring EXACT change)
PARKING: Park in the North Lot of Lincoln Park or on the northbound side of Fauntleroy (be aware if time limits are posted) and bike down to the South Lot to check in by 7:45.
START LOCATION: Meet no later than 7:45 a.m. in the South Lot of Lincoln Park (closest to the ferry dock and across from SW Cloverdale Street). Do not park in this lot (time restricted). To make payment and loading to the ferry easier, riders are asked to pay $6.10 (EXACT CHANGE ONLY) to their ride leaders when they sign in. A group payment will then be made to Washington State Ferries. You will be issued a group ticket by your ride leader to board the ferry. We will depart en mass (in pace group order) for the ferry line at 8:00 a.m. sharp, so please arrive early to sign the waiver and pay for your ticket. Late arrivals may not enter the group holding area on the dock once we have departed the Lincoln Park parking lot.
REST STOPS: At mile 26.2 (Park: water, no food) and Mile 36.5 (Grocery, Coffee Shop, Bakery)
BATHROOMS at START: Available on the ferry dock and on the ferry.
REMINDERS: Exposed cleats not allowed inside ferry cabin. Please do not ride your bike from the dock onto the ferry. We will depart the ferry on the Vashon side in pace group order and use the parking lot on 103rd to stage our departures for the ride. There is no fee for the return ferry. Vashon is very bike friendly but it does have curvy, hilly roads. Please ride mainly single file and take care to not block access ways while visiting the grocery store and coffee shops in town. Have fun enjoying the splendor of this island!
