"How To Identify Your Transferable Skills" - Jenkintown Career Networking Group

Details
Assessing your own experience, in order to work how you can fill the gaps in the sectors you want to move into, is an essential exercise if you want to stand out in the crowd.
Many individuals are not aware of what their transferable skills are and fail to describe what they are good at when it comes to the actual job interview. Also, many individuals who want to change career – and I meet and work with many of them as a career coach – buy into the myth that it is near impossible to change sectors in a recession.
It is easy to assume that when competition is tough, recruiters and hiring managers are going to hire the candidate with the most relevant experience. However, I have learned through conversations with recruiters and hiring managers that they want much more for their money and are looking at individuals with a wider skill set who can work across a number of areas.
This is the key advantages that job seekers have who are looking to change careers. Every individual has transferable skills of great use to employers in different industry sectors that are facing talent shortages and skill gaps.
According to all that I have read, the recession is not affecting employment across the board as it has happened in previous downturns, but has instead impacted specific sectors and types of work. We have seen the effects on banking and financial services but manufacturing and those semi-skilled jobs, for example auto workers, have also been affected.
However, other areas such as health care, entertainment, pharmaceuticals and biotech, while still facing skills gaps along with the need to stay ahead of global competition have largely remained unscathed by the recession.
Remember: Assessing your own experience, in order to work how you can fill gaps in the areas you want to move into, is an essential exercise if you want to stand out from the crowd utilizing your core transferable skills.
