Why do unsupported ideas about teaching and learning often outlast the evidence against them? The truth is that beliefs and practices in education are often shaped as much by intuition, anecdote, and misinformation as they are by research. This is true of everything from enduring educational myths to current debates about technology and artificial intelligence.

Join us on Thursday, November 5, at 7:00 p.m. ET for a Skeptical Inquirer Presents livestream with Tesia Marshik. Her work examines how students and educators think about learning, why misconceptions persist, and how evidence-based practices can improve outcomes. Drawing on themes from the forthcoming book Investigating Educational Psychology: Pseudoscience, Fringe Science, and Controversies, Marshik and host Leighann Lord will explore how the science of learning can help educators, parents, and policymakers separate compelling claims from credible evidence and build better overall practices.

Tesia Marshik is a professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse specializing in educational and developmental psychology. She is the lead editor of the forthcoming book Investigating Educational Psychology: Pseudoscience, Fringe Science, and Controversies and is widely known for her TEDx talk, “Don’t Believe Everything You Think.” Passionate about making psychological science accessible beyond academia, Marshik works to promote critical thinking, develop information literacy, and help people apply scientific evidence to teaching, learning, parenting, and everyday decision-making.
