About Changing Conversations:
Changing Conversations is a social project aiming to help humanity navigate difficult but important conversations in the face of controversy and uncertainty. We host Sydney events to help people find better ways to talk about many emotionally charged or taboo topics such as animal right, climate change, spirituality, depression, career change, feminism, mental health, sex and many more.
About Dr Peta Greenfield:
Peta grew up instilled with the belief that she could be anything that she wanted to be, but as a child she wasn't aware that generations of women had fought hard for that open-ended dream. It wasn't until she was at university that she began to really learn about feminism.
In ancient history and classics, feminist scholars were challenging the traditional historical narratives. As she continued to study, she began to recognise how the structures of modern society limit women's opportunities to become their most powerful selves.
The need for action was clear. Her first moment of activism came under the Howard government: letter dropping in her neighbourhood to inform others about the need for better rights to abortion. Peta gained her PhD in Ancient History and Classics studying the Vestal Virgins of Rome, and started organising the women she knew into circles for feminist conversation, reading and critique.
These groups continue today. She currently leads an English literature department and finds meaningful ways of engaging students in discussions about how they want society to be.
