Estelle Mining Tunnels Hike
Details
North Georgia has a long history in mining iron ore. Estelle Mining town has long been abandoned, but several of the mining tunnels remain open for exploration.
This is a moderately difficult hike for the length and the fact we trace the tunnels up and down hill. This year, we are adding a bonus waterfall at the end. We will keep a close eye on the weather as one or two of the tunnels do fill with water.
We will tackle the 9 mile hike starting promptly at 9 am. Please make sure to be at the trailhead no later than 8:45 am.
The area is controlled by the Georgia Wildlife Management and you will need to purchase a land pass or a license. A year long land pass for Georgia residents is $30 and a single day Combo Hunting/Fishing License is $5. The one day Combo Hunting/Fishing License does not require the Hunter Education Course. Non Georgia residents pay a slightly higher fee.
If you are only purchasing the one day pass, wait until closer to date to make sure the weather is cooperating.
The money collected is used by Georgia to maintain the trails, stock lakes with fish, and support the wildlife in the area.
You must have a pass to participate in the hike

Pack a lunch as we will eat once we arrive at the last tunnel. You will need a headlamp and good hiking shoes.
No flip flops or open toe shoes. The tunnels have very sharp rock fragments on the tunnel floors.
Bring plenty of water!
