This is. Bring your own Kayak or Paddle board event. None are provided.

This is your lucky day. I had to run to to Chattanooga quite literally for a few minutes and drive back to Alabama so I am pressed for time.

We are going to paddle to Burgess falls. After we will have a picnic at the Cane creek Recreation area where we put in and then head home.

Paddling from Cane Hollow Recreation Area (often referred to as the Cane Creek access) to the base of Burgess Fallsis one of the most iconic flat-water adventures in Tennessee. It is the only way to stand at the very bottom of the massive 136-foot waterfall, as the park’s hiking trails only lead to overlooks.

### The Route: What to Expect

  • Distance: Approximately 4 miles round-trip (2 miles each way).

  • Time: Budget 3 to 4 hours. This allows for a relaxed 1-hour paddle each way and an hour to explore the base of the falls.

  • Difficulty: Generally Easy to Moderate. The water is part of Center Hill Lake, so there is very little current. However, wind can make the return trip a bit of a workout.

The Experience:

  1. The Launch: You'll start at the Cane Hollow boat ramp. The road is paved, and there is a designated parking lot.

  2. Navigation: From the ramp, paddle straight across/slightly right. You will enter a winding, scenic creek flanked by high limestone bluffs.

### What to Bring

Because this trip often transitions from paddling to a rocky hike, your gear choice is important.

  • Essential Gear:

  • Life Jacket (PFD): Required by law and safety, especially near the base of the falls where currents can be unpredictable.

  • Sturdy Water Shoes: Crucial. Do not wear flip-flops. The rocks at the base are incredibly slippery and sharp. Use Keens, Chacos, or old sneakers.

  • Dry Bag: To keep your phone, car keys, and snacks bone-dry from the waterfall mist.

  • Personal Comfort:

  • Water & Snacks: There are no facilities once you leave the parking lot.

  • Sun Protection: Even in the shade of the bluffs, the sun reflects off the water.

  • Waterproof Camera/Case: You will want photos of the 136-foot drop from below.

### Pro Tips for a Better Trip

  • Check the Water Levels: If it has rained heavily, the current near the falls can be dangerous. Conversely, in late fall, be prepared for a longer walk over rocks.
  • Arrive Early: Cane Hollow is a popular spot. On summer weekends, the parking lot can fill up by 10:00 AM.
  • Watch for "Spider Rain": If you paddle too close to the overhanging trees on the banks, you might knock down small (harmless) spiders into your boat. Stay toward the middle of the channel!
  • Respect the Park: Alcohol is prohibited on the water and within the state park boundaries.

All of the facts none of the flavor. Sigh!
