About us
# Chess IRL
Community-driven. Real chess. Real people. Real pieces.
Chess IRL is an independent Austin chess community centered on face-to-face play, friendly competition, and genuine connection. Our meetups are casual, social, and welcoming, with players ranging from complete beginners to experienced tournament competitors.
Come to learn, compete, meet new people, or simply enjoy a few relaxed games over a real board. There are no rating requirements, no formal pairings, and no pressure to stay for the entire meetup.
## Who should join Chess IRL?
Absolutely everyone.
All skill levels are welcome, and we especially encourage beginners, newcomers, and people returning to chess after time away. You are welcome to come alone—there is usually someone ready for a game, and our regulars are happy to help new players get settled.
## When and where do we meet?
We meet every Sunday from 2:00–6:00 PM at:
Central Machine Works
4824 E. Cesar Chavez Street
Austin, Texas
Chess IRL has a relaxed, drop-in format, so arrive whenever it works for you and stay for as many games as you like. People flow in and out throughout the afternoon, and games frequently continue beyond 6:00 PM—sometimes as late as 9:00 PM—depending on turnout, energy, and available space.
We typically meet inside at the tables near the front doors at the E. Cesar Chavez Street entrance. When Central Machine Works is especially crowded, we find whatever space is available elsewhere inside or outside in the beer garden. Just look for the chessboards.
## Do I need to bring a chess set or clock?
Chess IRL currently provides approximately 20 chess sets and 10 clocks, so you do not need to bring anything.
When turnout is especially high, extra sets and clocks are always helpful and appreciated.
## Are there any dues or fees?
Never. Chess is for everyone.
Chess IRL is completely free, and there will never be required dues or participation fees. Donations of durable chess sets or clocks for the community are welcome but never expected.
## Does Chess IRL have any formal affiliations?
No. Chess IRL is an independent, community-focused group with no formal business, club, or organizational affiliations.
The community belongs to the people who show up, and member feedback, ideas, and involvement are always welcome.
Come for a game, stay for the people. We’ll see you over the board.
