Rutherford's 1909 analysis of this experiment proved the existence of the atomic nucleus. It involves a beam of alpha particles being scattered off in various directions by a gold target. The problem was to explain how the outgoing path depends on how nearly head-on the collision is.
In this event, I will explain how I used a combination of Python programming, geometry and post-calculus math to clarify and repair the garbled explanations found in textbooks and Wikipedia.. This is classical physics based on Newton's ancient Laws of Motion rather than Schrodinger's equation.
In a future event, I will present the corresponding quantum solution.
