Lake Michigan wreck dives

Finish off the 2026 summer local dive season with some Lake Michigan diving with Double Action charters. The charter is scheduled to dive the Material Service Barge and the Holly and Illinois. Both wrecks near the southern end of Lake Michigan. Both wrecks are relatively shallow, about 30' max. The MSB is a low profile self unloading barge that was designed to deliver aggregate up the Chicago River without having to raise the bridges. She carried the materials to build many of Chicago's roads. She sank with loss of life just outside the break wall near Hammond. The Illinois was a hydraulic dredge that sank in 1907. The Holly was intentionally sunk adjacent to her in 2000, making this a two for one site.

Recommended certification and experience: prior Lake Michigan diving is ideal, but these are good first Lake Michigan dive sites. Open water or higher certification. Water temperatures are variable but usually in the range of 55-65, so drysuit is highly recommended.

If your skills are a bit rusty or you haven't done any cold water diving, it is highly recommended to gain experience in the quarry before doing a charter.
You will need to bring all your own gear, including tanks and weights, as there is none on the boat.

Directions From Chicago: take the Skyway to Indiana. Follow signs to Horseshoe Casino, exiting on Indianapolis Blvd. Turn Right at the the big neon Horseshoe Casino sign. Go around several bends. Take a sharp right turn at the sign for Hammond Marina. Go to Guardhouse and tell them you're with Double Action. Proceed inside the Marina parking lot toward the Casino Garage. There is free parking, and carts are available for your gear. The boat is on the end of the Jet Ski dock; entrance right next to the parking garage.
