See all- Cat People (1982)Alamo Cinema Drafthouse , Chicago , IL
Leave it to Paul Schrader to take the Jacques Tourneur classic, and turn the horny-dial up to ten, if not eleven. Not that the original didn't suggest as much as it could in the 1940's at the deep undercurrent of psychosexuality infusing the material - but leave it to cocaine and the 1980's to help it emerge fully. Irena (Nastassja Kinski) meets Oliver (John Heard) and falls in love, exciting her more animal side (she is the cat person of the title). But the romance is hindered upon the arrival of her estranged perverted brother Paul (Malcolm McDowell), who is unfortunately also a cat person. Will his lust for his sister interfere in Irena's new life? Schrader, fresh off of writing RAGING BULL and directing AMERICAN GIGOLO, takes the sweltering sexuality of the original into the new age, in a way only Schrader could.

- Crimes of the Future (2022)Alamo Cinema Drafthouse , Chicago , IL
Canadian director and beloved weirdo David Cronenberg always has something to say. He may add sexual organs to abdomens and create new gynecological tools, however in addition to being delightfully gross, they all come with a purpose. CRIMES OF THE FUTURE is his scathing and uncomfortable look at the art world, and just what he thinks they take too seriously. In the near-ish future, artists use their bodies as their medium for creation, and the public worships them for this indulgence. Not a classic body-horror, but also not for the squeamish.
