Join us for a leisurely Saturday morning stroll through one of Chicago’s most distinctive neighborhoods—where German heritage, Old World charm, historic architecture, local businesses, and quirky hidden gems come together.

We’ll uncover the stories behind the immigrants, businesses, churches, cultural landmarks, and community builders that shaped Lincoln Square. You’ll probably discover places you’ve walked past dozens of times without knowing the stories behind them!

This walk is perfect for architecture lovers, history buffs, photographers, curious Chicagoans, and anyone who enjoys being a tourist in their own city. Come walk, learn, and meet fellow history lovers!

We had such a great time exploring Prairie Avenue that we’re doing it again this Sunday! 🙌

Join us for a leisurely walk through one of Chicago’s most storied and architecturally fascinating historic districts. Once known as “the sunny street that held the sifted few,” Prairie Avenue was home to Chicago’s wealthiest families during the city’s spectacular Gilded Age.

✨ Step back in time and discover where industrial giants such as George Pullman, Marshall Field, and Philip Armour built their grandest homes in brick and stone. We’ll stroll past surviving mansions, landmark churches, hidden architectural gems, and sites connected to the people and events that helped shape Chicago.

Why Prairie Avenue?
In the late 19th century, Prairie Avenue was Chicago’s most prestigious address—the city’s original “Millionaire’s Row.” After the Great Fire of 1871, wealthy Chicagoans moved south of the city center and built grand homes along the quiet, tree-lined avenue.

Industrial titans including George Pullman, Marshall Field, Philip Armour, and John Glessner made Prairie Avenue their home. Architects such as Henry Hobson Richardson, Solon Beman, and Cobb & Frost designed many of the magnificent residences that lined the street.

By the early 20th century, industry had moved closer, fortunes and families relocated, and many of the mansions disappeared. But several remarkable buildings survived, giving us today’s Prairie Avenue Historic District—one of Chicago’s best glimpses into Gilded Age wealth, architecture, and ambition. 🏛️

The walk ends approximately four blocks from the starting point. If driving, consider parking somewhere along the route for an easier walk back to your car.
