Chicago Ruby Hack Night - Sinatra App
Details
The group get requests for books to be reviewed by our members. Matt Polito has written a very basic app with Sinatra and RSpec to handle the administrative details for us. Let's add features to the app so we can start using it.
All levels of Ruby expertise are welcome, including beginners. We'll split up the new features so we can work on them in pairs and then merge everyone's changes through the magic of git.
Bring your laptop with Ruby installed.
For this hack night you'll need a GitHub account so sign up if you haven't already. (Basic accounts are free.) Save time and strain on Enova's wireless by installing the sinatra and rspec gems beforehand. Beginners: If you don't know what this all means, come to hack night anyway and you'll learn.

Log in to your GitHub account
go to
https://github.com/chicagoruby/booksiebot7000
press the Fork button
Now you have a copy of this repository in your GitHub account
In the command/terminal window on your PC, go to your coding directory and type
git clone git@github.com:your-username/booksiebot7000.git
(replacing 'your-username' with your GitHub username)
then
cd booksiebot7000
and get to work. (If you use rvm you will probably want to edit the .rvmrc.example file and use it for your .rvmrc first.)
It's best if you make a new branch to work in.
Note that database changes go in lib/database.rb
To run the app locally,
shotgun config.ru
then go to http://localhost:9393/
Commit your changes and
git push origin master
When you're ready to send it to us to include in the ChicagoRuby app, go to your copy of the repository on github.com, make sure you're in the correct branch, and press the Pull Request button. The defaults on this page are probably OK but check the documentation if you're not sure. Then press Send Pull Request to submit it.
