ChicagoRuby: Elmhurst - How Do I Build... ?
Details
Come and join us, we have some good presentations this month! Aijaz Ansari and Jonathan Allured.
Aijaz Ansari:
About my talk
My talk will describe a web framework I wrote in perl. What started out as a bunch of CGI scripts in the late 1990s has evolved to a pretty robust framework using Apache and mod_perl - one that makes rapid development and deployment of web-based apps very easy. I'll talk about how I handle things like templates, session management, database access and RESTful services. Using Apache with mod_perl gives the developer access to the full Apache engine. However, popular perl development is on the decline. I would like to get audience feedback on how such tasks are performed using Ruby.
About me
After 4 years writing telecom software for Motorola, I started a company writing web-based applications. 5 years later I joined Citadel, a Chicago based Hedge Fund, where, among other things, I continued writing web based applications. At the end of 2012, with a few apps in the App Store, I left Citadel for Vaporstream, to write iOS apps full-time. But even now I find myself writing the odd website for a friend or a web service for an iOS app.
Jonathan Allured will share a project he has been working on....
"I've got some lessons learned that I'd like to talk about and some cool stuff I learned.
I've got some mobile stuff to share, some stuff about working with keyboard shortcuts in JS and a cool technique for working with multiple interfaces in Cucumber. "
Lunch After the Meeting
After most meetings, we go to lunch at the Elmhurst Restaurant, roughly two blocks NW of the meeting venue. Address: 441 West Lake Street, Elmhurst, IL 60126. Join us!
The "How Do I Build...?" format is somewhere between a hack night and a presentation.
The key question: "How do I build [X] in Ruby or Rails?" We might talk about the best shopping cart or calendar or whatever for Rails. We might talk about the best way to do database maintenance with Ruby, or the best tools for organizing Ruby or Rails development.
Every ChicagoRuby member is invited to drive. Let the group know what you want to do, what you've tried, and what would be interesting to you. Let's put our heads together and create!
