ChicagoRuby: Downtown - Rails vs. Java in the Fortune 500

Ruby and Rails are home to a lot of very smart people who create wonderful things. Some of us work in a different world.

Our presenter, Dean Pannell (http://twitter.com/dinotrac), has spent most of the last few years working on applications written by somebody else for Fortune 500 companies that don't do Rails. The first hint of how different that world is this: He can't tell you who they are. He can, however, tell you a few of his experiences, and tell you of some things he has learned along the way.

Projects to be discussed:
a. Website for a subsidiary of a Fortune 500 corporation selling assorted food products. Situation: keep it up and going while it was being killed off.
b. Backend service for a Fortune 500 manufacturer selling products known all of the world. Originally slated for Java, the developers proposed Rails when it became clear that a Java solution could not be delivered in time.
