Alginate is a compound derived from brown algae and bacteria that is already used as a promising polymer for various materials. Recently, biodesigners and bioartists have taken an interest in the material for fashion and plastic replacement purposes.

Join us January 24th at the Empirical Taproom to play around with this fun and interesting compound, look at derivatives of alginate and discuss how the material might used in the future. To see what's out there, check out the 2016 winning team from the Biodesign Challenge (http://biodesignchallenge.org/fit2016/), and their work since the contest (https://www.algiknit.com/).

As always come join us for drinks, discussions, and a great time with other people interested in DIY biology here in Chicago.
