PUBLIC SPEAKING for Fun, Confidence and Competence
Details
The best exercise for speaking is speaking!
Christchurch Speakers knows that many people have a fear of speaking, but with heaps of encouragement and a light-hearted, supporting environment, public speaking can be not only manageable, but fun. It might even become your superpower!
People come along to:
- Build confidence speaking in front of others
- Practice real-life speeches (weddings, work, presentations)
- Improve their English
- Learn to think on their feet
The agenda is simple:
- Icebreaker warm-up question round-the-room (just a sentence or two, nothing scary)
- Prepared speeches (5-7 mins)
- Readings (news article, book passage, poem, short story - 3-5 mins)
Coffee Break
- Fun speaking activities
- Impromptu speaking (answer the question or introduce yourself for 30-60 second)
Christchurch Speakers builds you up, doesn't break you down!
You can either volunteer for a speech or reading by emailing Rob rbwoolley@gmail.com. Check the allocated times above and please try to stick to time.
Otherwise, just RSVP and turn up. No need to prepare. Bring a friend if you like, bring a "can do" attitude and come and meet heaps of people just like you.
Why does Christchurch Speakers exist? Mark Baker and I were both trainers for Toastmasters International. It's a great organization but sometimes it's nice to just turn up, listen, have some fun and go home without the hassle of committees, dues, and admin. We are just speaking. We do ask for a $5 contribution to cover room hire, MeetUp, tea, coffee, and biscuits (the important things).
Who attends Christchurch Speakers? People from all walks of life, all ages, all nationalities, all levels of speaking ability, and all sorts of industries. Everyone is welcome!
Some want to overcome their fear of speaking. Others are preparing for a specific event (wedding, funeral, conference). Some want to improve their English. Some want to speak professionally. Whatever your reason, the more you speak, the better you get.

How do I improve? We don't do formal evaluations. Instead, everyone fills out a simple feedback form with what they liked and suggestions for improvement.
All sessions are video recorded and shared with you unpublished on YouTube so you can see how you went. (It's not public, don't panic).
If you want more specific feedback ask Mark or me, we're always happy to help.

If you've read this far, you may as well just turn up :)
