About us

ANNOUNCING --->  We are ready to get this thing rolling!

We're putting together plans for an event in September, and we would love to have some help.  If you know of a good venue for our first get-together, someplace informal, preferably serving food and beverages,  but not too loud (we need to be able to hear each other, after all), or have any other valuable skills (or time) please let us know!

GROUP DESCRIPTION:

This meetup IS dedicated to all professionals involved in Cyber Security for Automated Processes and Control Systems including security for Operating Technology (OT), Industrial Control Systems (ICS), SCADA Systems, Transportation Systems, Building Control Systems (BCS), and even emerging Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Our purpose is to connect the professionals in the Greater Cincinnati area with real interest in or responsibility for the cyber security of these systems.

We're just getting started here, so our meetups might not be very frequent at first, but the more people get involved, the more great events we can hold!  Contact us if you would like to volunteer to help lead the group!

What does a roller coaster have in common with a refinery? More than you'd think. This talk applies bowtie analysis — a proven process safety methodology — to theme park ride control systems, showing how OT cybersecurity and functional safety can be quantified together in a single framework.

Theme park ride control systems occupy a rare and underappreciated position in the OT cybersecurity landscape: they are life-safety-critical and continuously networked. While the integrated system is unique to each installation, the components themselves are an integration of commercial IT and OT products, often managed by teams whose primary expertise is mechanical and electrical engineering, not cybersecurity. As cyber threats targeting industrial control systems grow more sophisticated, the theme park industry needs analytical frameworks that speak both languages: the language of functional safety and the language of cyber risk. Bowtie analysis does exactly that.

John will examine managing the risks in these ubiquitous systems using bowtie analysis, which is a visual risk methodology with deep roots in the process safety world, refineries, chemical plants, offshore platforms, where it has been used for decades to map threat and cause pathways to a top event, and consequence pathways from the top event to harm.

This talk is for everyone dealing with ICS/OT cybersecurity risks and their management.
