City Walk Downtown Hospitals, 7.0 miles
Details
Before the Texas Medical Center spudded in on South Main, before Memorial Hermann facilities began appearing all over the the county, health care was only found within a mile or so of downtown. After all, five miles from Allen's Landing was a world of corn cribs and cotton fields. Today's walk takes us by the Galveston-Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railway Hospital in the Near North Side, the Jeff Davis charity Hospital, and St Joseph Hospital, the only facility still present in downtown.
Parking: Several of the lots are not free but there is much free parking along the street and on the other side of Memorial. Come early and give yourself time to park.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The heat in Texas is always a concern so let someone know if you are having a hard time. Light-colored and loose fitting clothing are recommended.
