Allen's Landing was at the head of navigation: as far upstream as the the Allen brothers, New York land speculators, could get their steamboat and still have room to turn around. Above the point where the White Oak Bayou joined the Buffalo Bayou there was simply not enough water to navigate commercial shipping. They named their venture Houston after Sam Houston, the popular new president of the Republic of Texas.

Parking:
There is plenty of free parking at the Silver Street Studios complex across the railroad tracks from the Tejas Brewing Company

Our organizers are not guides nor do we have any special training. We are here to come up with hiking ideas and get the hike started. Take the same precautions you would if hiking alone, including the fitness needed to make long hikes. Then enjoy the hike among friends.

The walk is over paved sidewalks and is a mix of sun and urban shade.
