***FREE EVENT*** Boston Sunrise Through Deer Island 'Eggs' on Labor Day

Hi all – Twice a year the sun rises directly through the MWRA treatment facility ‘eggs’ on Deer Island in Winthrop. If you line yourself up properly within a 12-day window, you can shoot can get the sun rising directly through the 'egg shells' of the plant standing in South Boston over the water. I've done this a few times and got ‘the shot’ I had in my head. This is a weather dependent event. Sunrise is at 6:09AM. Perhaps within 1-5 minutes from this, the sun will be between the ‘egg shells as it moves fast. I used the Photographers Ephemeris app to pinpoint alignment for the sunrise through the ‘egg shells.’ We will meet at 5:30AM at the McKim monument on Castle Island in South Boston. I'm likely to come a bit before 5:30AM to try and get some glassy water shots with my neutral density filters during ‘Blue hour.’

The most important thing (besides coffee and an alarm clock) is a long lens. I’m talking about 400mm minimum on FX cameras as we will be standing almost 2 miles away from Deer Island. For crop sensors, 300mm would be about 450mm equivalent on some cameras. (I took the event cover photo at 500mm with my D800.) I don’t own a 400mm+ lens, so I will be renting a 180-600mm Nikon lens locally from Hunts photo. Another option would be lensrentals.com site. If you do use a large lens, a stable tripod that can support the weight is a must.

Mostly cloudy skies or rain will cancel and possibly move to another day as there is a window of a few days for sunrise alignment. Several possible locations where one can stand in South Boston to get this shot on different days.

Park in the Castle Island parking lot. On the left is Sullivans restaurant. There is a straight path next to it that leads out to the pier and the meetup point at the McKay monument. After the meetup, you can also take fabulous pics around the area of Castle Island. It is an old Civil War era fort. So many pic opportunities at sunrise there outside of our meetup.
