About us

“A classic is classic not because it conforms to certain structural rules, or fits certain definitions (of which its author had quite probably never heard). It is classic because of a certain eternal and irrepressible freshness.” Edith Wharton

We read one classic book each month and gather at a pub or coffee shop to discuss it.  Discussions are casual and everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts.  It is enlightening to hear from many different points of view, so we ask members to moderate their time speaking so others have a chance to contribute.

If you are comfortable doing so, be prepared to take a turn at the start of the meeting to describe your general reaction to the book (1 to 2 minutes). After everyone has shared, we have an open discussion. Please also consider choosing a theme, topic, character, symbol, or other element of the book that you would like the group to discuss. Midway through the meeting (or when the general discussion flags), we will briefly discuss everyone’s topic of choice (if it has not already been covered) or those of most interest to the group.

Meeting attendees nominate titles for future reading selections. Following the meeting, an online poll is opened, and all group members can vote on the nominations.

There is a $15 annual membership fee which is due on or before attending your first meeting of the year.
