Pachama: Harnessing AI & Satellites to Protect our Forests

Details

Our first tech-talk of 2024 is a repeat ClimateLink speaker, Diego Saez Gil of Pachama. Diego first presented Pachama in April 2019 on using AI to protect our forestland before it was a buzzword — bringing validated measurements to the forest-based offset marketplace.

Since we're covering AI for Climate, we thought it be fitting that Chat GPT write an intro for Pachama.
-------------------
Pachama is a technology company that focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and remote sensing to drive environmental conservation, specifically in the area of forests. The company operates at the intersection of environmental science and technology, aiming to fight climate change by restoring nature's carbon sinks – primarily forests. Pachama uses advanced satellite imaging, machine learning, and other forms of technology to monitor and verify forest carbon sequestration, essentially measuring how much carbon dioxide forests are absorbing from the atmosphere. This technology enables the company to support and scale reforestation and forest conservation projects by ensuring their effectiveness and transparency.

By creating a marketplace for carbon credits, Pachama connects businesses looking to offset their carbon footprint with verified forest conservation and reforestation projects. These projects are rigorously vetted through Pachama's technology, ensuring that they indeed contribute to carbon sequestration. This approach not only helps in the fight against climate change by increasing the amount of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere but also supports biodiversity and helps local communities involved in these projects.

Pachama's innovative use of technology aims to make the carbon offset market more accessible, transparent, and reliable, encouraging more investments in forest conservation and helping companies achieve their sustainability goals.
